1807-1830 ca.
Designed during the period of French rule (1806-1814), this was intended as the public residence of the new sovereigns. Work on the building – which required the demolition of Sansovino’s church of San Gemignano – involved Giovanni Antonio Antolini, Giuseppe Soli and Lorenzo Santi; the latter worked only on the last phases of the projects, whilst Soli is to be credited with the façade overlooking St. Mark’s Square.
Within the central portico is a monumental staircase that now leads up to the Correr Museum, from which one can pass through into the National Archaeological Museum and the State Rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana; visits to all three are included in the ‘Museums of St. Mark’s Square’ ticket.
