Venezia

9th cent., rebuilt in 11th cent.; façade 12th-15th cent.

Built in the ninth century to house the body of St. Mark, this was the chapel of the Doge’s Palace; in effect, the two buildings are the very symbol of Venice and its thousand years of history.
Rebuilt in 1063-1094 in Romanesque-Byzantine style, the basilica would over time be richly adorned with mosaics and decorations that bring together the various languages of Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance art. Since 1807 it has been the cathedral of Venice.
Admission is free, though there is a limit on the number of people admitted at any one time.
