LOGGETTA AND BELL-TOWER

In Piazza San Marco, the Venice Water Authority in collaboration with the Procuratoria di San Marco is working to consolidate the bell tower. The bell tower you see today was built between 1903 and 1912, an exact replica of the structural configuration of the previous tower which collapsed in 1902.
In the years following the reconstruction, the foundations began to show signs of the subsidence which over time would cause the bell tower to lean by about 7 cm over the full height. A series of consolidation measures are therefore being implemented to remedy this situation by "ringing" the foundations with titanium bars.
The work is being carried out by the Consorzio Venezia Nuova, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport - Water Authority concessionary responsible for implementing all activities for the physical and environmental safeguarding of the lagoon delegated to the State.
The Consorzio Venezia Nuova operates on the basis of a general plan of interventions centred around construction of Mose (the system of mobile barriers being installed at the lagoon inlets to protect the city and lagoon from all high waters); reinforcement of the coastline and protection and improvement of the lagoon ecosystem.
